Welcome to our continuation of the Freedom Series, in the topics for the week we learnt that deliverance is the children's bread, we also learnt how to please God and be blessed everyday of our lives by loving people who God loves.
Today, I will be speaking on Blessing Our Enemies
Have you ever wondered why God says that you should bless your enemies?
Matthew 5:44-45
The answer can be found in Proverbs 18:21. It says that Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Because life and death is in the power of the tongue...eat the fruit thereof, it means that you eat the fruit of what you speak whether it be blessings or curses.
Your obedience to God is to do good and not evil. It may in time past sounded like the right thing to do was to curse your enemies because they deserve it (or so you thought). But not so, the Lord says, vengeance is mine, I will repay, Hebrews 10:30, Deuteronomy 32:35.
- Leave it to God
- Pray for them who despitefully use you and abuse you, in doing so you heap coals of fire on their heads, Romans 12:14, 19-21.
Don't you know that you were once yourself an enemy too? Yes! You were once an enemy of God; he had mercy and forgave you your sins. Hear this; if you don't forgive others when they hurt you or mistreat you, then you will not be forgiven either. God also says blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. If at anytime you sin against the Most High and seek his pardon, you will receive mercy and forgiveness in the same measure that you gave it.
Note keenly, I am not saying that you should befriend your enemy, in fact the bible says in Psalm 1:1 to not associate yourself with them. But for your sake and your relationship with God you must:
- Bless them and not curse them
- Speak good of them
- Bless them in prayer
- Bless them, Feed them if they are hungry
- If nothing good to say keep quiet: Don't say they should die, don't say they should get sick.
What then should you do?...pray against the spirit influencing the person. For example, a jealous spirit, rebuke that in their life, intercede for them. For we wrestle not against people - flesh and blood, according to Ephesians 6:12.
If they choose to repent, good for them. And you too should be happy for the soul because you are on the side of Jesus Christ right? "For God so love the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.", John 3:16. God falls the rain on the just and unjust. A true child of God you must do likewise, Matthew 5:45.
If they do not repent, then God will allow justice for you. But remember do not rejoice because God says, "Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: Lest the Lord see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him". Proverbs 24:17-18.
